Connections over networking

Daily Digest: No. 5

Without realizing it was happening, I am slowly collecting a group of friends who are small business owners. When you work alone and in a niche market, it’s not easy to find people near you that share the same passion for creating a business from scratch.

Over the years I’ve had friends that specifically said they’d never consider starting a business which is unfathomable to me. Who else would I ever want to work for?! 🤷‍♀️

I’ve tried to find small biz friends here and there, gone to networking events, joined the chamber of commerce, and even started groups on my own but nothing ever stuck.

Networking seems like a dirty word. It’s up there with shoulder-rubbing and schmoozing for me. I don’t want to know people only enough to ask them for favors. I want people to know me, remember my name and know I’d help if I can.

I never considered myself a networker. I guess I don’t set out to meet people just to add them to my Rolodex.

But lately I’m realizing that most of my actual good friends are small business owners!

I feel like I’ve gotten there. I have a network. But that network I’ve built is really just people I’ve connected with in a more meaningful way.
